A little play. A sharper day.

Working Memory

N-Back

The best-known working memory task there is. A square lights up and a letter appears β€” and the question, every time, is whether each of them matches what came N steps ago.

Ready for the real thing?

One practice run at 1-back that walks you through it, then three scored blocks that follow you up or down. No sound needed.

Two separate questions every trial: the square, and the letter. Press either, both, or neither.

How to Play

  • Watch the square

Is it in the same place it was N steps back?

  • Watch the letter

Separately: is it the same letter as N steps back?

  • Follow the level

Clear a block and N goes up. Struggle and it comes back down.

What It Challenges

  • Working memory

Hold two rolling sequences at once and update both every few seconds.

  • Interference

Let go of what is now too old to matter, without losing the rest.

  • Sustained focus

Keep it up for a whole block, not just a few trials.
